Situated in Alameda County is the city of Alameda, California. The name of the city was chosen by a popular vote conducted in 1853, and is Spanish for "grove of poplar trees". It became a �charter city� in 1916 as apposed to being a �general law� city. Alameda is located on an island on the east side of San Francisco Bay next to Oakland. It has earned the nickname, �Silicon Island,� due to the thriving high-tech firms in its modern business parks. This island city is located on the east shore of San Francisco Bay with Victorian homes and shade lined streets covering the 12.4 square miles.
