Albany GA Georgia Yellow Pages - Albany, GA Online Yellow Pages
Albany was a frontier community with a disproportionate number of single men, prostitutes, and bars. A third of its population was African American, but almost all were slaves. Until the 1940s Albany's population was predominantly African American. The vast majority of blacks did not own property; the men worked as day laborers, the women as washwomen and cooks. Baptist, Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian, and Catholic congregations had each built churches on city lots donated by Nelson Tift, but the majority of the residents remained undecided on religion. Both the Baptist and the Episcopal Church had more slave members than whites.
