One of the first settlers in the Canton area was John Grant. Mr. Grant built what is now the Haines House Museum. With the aid of his daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Ridgeway Haines, Mr. Grant operated a station on the Underground Railroad. The Family offered food, shelter and safety for many passing through the Canton area to escape slavery in the Southern States. There is more than history offered at the Haines House. There is evidence that a community existed that held common beliefs and ideas about personal freedom. Canton is exceptionally proud to have such a historical treasure.
