Antioch California is one of the oldest towns in the state. When the town was first discovered it was during the gold rush in 1850. Several years later, coal was discovered in some of the surrounding hills in the area. The Empire Coal Company was founded in 1876. After the discovery of coal, copper was found near Antioch. People even tried to bore for petroleum in 1865 but drillers could not obtain enough to make it worth the work. Antioch is a community that has seen many changes and much growth through the years.
