The city of Cranston is actually considered part of the larger metropolitan area of Providence. It is located just south - and inland - of the capital city. Cranston is 3 1/2 miles of shore on the Providence River where it begins to broaden into Narragansett Bay. Cranston is also bounded by the City of Warwick, by the Town of West Warwick on the south and by the Town of Scituate on the west. Western Cranston has become more desirable in recent years for both residential and industrial development. This is primarily due to the completion of Route 295 and the installation of sanitary sewers in the area.
