Danbury was chartered as a city in 1889. The city and the town (township) of Danbury consolidated in 1965. Danbury was formerly known as the Hat Capital of the World and official supplier of silk top hats to presidents. It is perhaps best known today as the headquarters of Union Carbide and other industries that have moved out of metropolitan areas. Danbury was first settled by colonists in 1685, when eight families moved to the area from the area that is now Norwalk and Stamford. The settlers originally chose the name Swampfield for their town, but in October 1687, the general court decreed.
