The settlement that became Fairfield, California was established in the early 1850s. The town was a frequently visited post on a trade route connecting the Bay Area of San Francisco with the gold camps of the Sierra Nevada. Robert H. Waterman, the captain of a clipper ship, named Fairfield after his hometown in Connecticut. Waterman donated his land and offered financing and guidance for the design and construction of new county buildings. Therefore, he was able to get the county seat of Solano moved to Fairfield. It remains the county seat to this day. The city was incorporated in 1903. Fairfield's elevation is only 20 feet above sea level.
