Fargo, North Dakota is located in the Red River Valley. The river is also Fargo�s western border with Minnesota. The valley�s deep black soil once was the bed of glacial Lake Agassiz. Its area, as indicated by well-marked shore-lines and deltas, was a hundred miles wide and over four hundred miles long, stretching far into Manitoba, and the waters were two to four hundred feet deep. Throughout most of the area, little lake sediment was deposited (the thickest lake deposits are found along the North Dakota-Minnesota border). The clay-rich soils that underlie Fargo and the Red River Valley are among the richest in the world, supporting crops that include wheat, barley, sugar beets, and sunflowers.
