Located in Cumberland County, for which it is the capital seat, Fayetteville, North Carolina has a long and rich heritage. The area was originally settled by Scottish immigrants in 1739. The early settlements of Cambellton and Cross Creek combined in 1783 to create Fayetteville. The name came from a Revolutionary War hero named Marquis de Lafayette. Fayetteville was the state capital of North Carolina from 1789 to 1793 when it lost out to Raleigh to become the permanent capital of the state. The building in Fayetteville that was once the capital of North Carolina was burned down in the Great Fire of 1831.
