Fort Smith has played an important role in the expansion and development of the United States. By the early 19th century more and more white settlers were moving into the territory acquired through the Louisiana Purchase of 1805. Fort Smith was for a brief period the capital of the Northwest Territories. It is located at a natural trans-shipping point for merchandise, from boats that were at that time paddled all the way from eastern and southern Canada, down the Slave River as far as the rapids near Fort Smith. Fort Smith was established as a military outpost to patrol the neighboring Indian Territory in 1817 and was named after General Thomas Smith. The fort was abandoned seven years later in 1824, but by that time a town founded by John Rogers was formed alongside the fort.
Legal assistance usually refers to low-cost or free legal counsel for individuals and families because they can't afford a paid lawyer on contract. It is one way for young people coming out of school with a legal degree but without much experience to perform important and necessary legal services for disadvantaged groups. It also looks good on a professional resume as being civic minded and fair as opposed to being in the profession strictly for fame and riches. At times, it does create a mismatch in legal proceedings where the opponent has well-paid and experienced legal counsel. Usually legal assistance is funded by donors who are also civic minded and may want the tax write-off as a donation.
