Greenvillewas founded in 1771 and given the name "Martinsborough" after Royal Governor Josiah Martin. In 1774 the town moved three miles west to its current location on the south banks of the Tar River. Three years later, the town�s name changed to Greenesville in honor of General Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War hero. Before long it was shortened to Greenville. Today, the city is over 31.8 square miles and has a population of more than 75,000. Greenville is the main industrial and economic center for Eastern North Carolina and is an important location for education, industry, medicine, and culture.
