As the original founders of Hawthorne, Harry Dana Lombard and Benjamin I Harding created the Hawthorne Improvement Company with the plan of building an 80 acre town site. Harding�s daughter Laurine Harding Woolwine, chose the name Hawthorne because she shared her birthday with Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author. The city was then advertised as the town between the city and the see; appealing to poultry and vegetable farmers. WJ Anderson and his wife were the first to settle there and were the first home builders in the area, in Nov 1906. Later their son Glenn served as Hawthorne�s mayor, congressman from the California 17th District, and Lieutenant Governor of California.
