In the 1920's the city was called 'Little Chicago' because of the many stories of Al Capone using the city as a distribution center for bootlegged alcohol during the time of prohibition. It was thought that he would smuggle alcohol from the mountain distillers to the northern cities through Johnson. During that time Johnson was said to have a high rate of crime as well. The city has much history to tell before that time too. Many singers and musicians have come through Johnson City and it must have left quite an impression on many of them because it is mentioned in several songs.
