Incorporated in 1890, Kent was first named Titusville, and then changed to Kent. A great flood changed the valley temporarily into a lake, so The Howard Hanson Dam was constructed to prevent future flooding. It became a primary distribution center because of the commercial development while the dam was being built. Before the flood and the dam, Kent was known as the Lettuce Capital of the World, because of its fertile soil. Now it is a thriving city with a Boeing facility, REI headquarters, Oberto Sausage and General Electric Appliances and Whirlpool distribution facilities. It was also nominated Sportstown of the Year for the state of Washington by Sports Illustrated in 2003.
