The city of Longmontcame about in a very unusual way back in 1870. A group of men from Chicago came up with a plan to set up a new town in Colorado. They formed "The Chicago-Colorado Colony" and sold memberships to the new town. They took the money they collected and bought 60,000 acres of land now called Longmont. The men brought all of the needed lumber and building materials and they constructed a small town by the summer of 1871. They named the new town "Longmont" in honor of Longs Peak, which is clearly visible from the town.
