A controversy continues to linger over the city of Montebello regarding the replacing of an American Flag at a high school. On March 27, 2006 students at El Rancho Unified together with Whittier Union High School districts led a protest over immigration reform. Students trespassed onto school ground property and replaced the American flag with the Mexican flag. The student caught was of Mexican nationalist and was punished accordingly to California Education Code. The Montebello students were not involved with the incident; however, they still received hate letters and threats from around the country. The school newspaper received the majority of these letters.
