The city of Pine Bluff was prosperous until the Civil War began. At that time the area became over crowded with citizens when freed slaves came into the city. As time passed and the war came to an end, Pine Bluffslowly started to recover. Crops of cotton increased as more farms were started and the construction of railroads helped to make the cities economy grow. The first railroad came through Pine Bluff in 1873 and the first utility company was the Pine Bluff Gas Company in the same year. They received telephone service for the first time in 1883.
