The city of Scranton is rich both in natural environment and in history. It is located in the Pocono Mountains region, an area renowned for the beauty of its lakes and forests and the access it offers for all kinds of sports and other outdoor activities. Scranton was founded in 1786, and incorporated as a city on April 23, 1866. Scranton was a place unknown. The valley was an almost unbroken wilderness covered with a heavy growth of oak, hemlock, pine, beech and maple. Rich anthracite deposits in the area led to economic growth, which began in the 1840's when George and Seldon Scranton established several iron furnaces here.
