The history of Sioux Falls revolves around the gorgeous cascades of the Big Sioux River. Approximately 14,000 years ago the falls were formed when the last glacial ice sheet redirected the flow of the river into the large looping bends of its present course. Fed by water from the melting ice, the river uncovered the underlying Sioux quartzite bedrock, a beautiful hard pinkish stone. Sioux Falls� Siouxland Heritage Museum has beautiful examples of the stone and much about the town�s history. Their Old Courthouse Museum is a beautifully-restored 1800s quartzite building which contains three floors of educational and interesting history exhibits.
