The City of Southfield on April 28, 1958 was incorporated favorably as a city. Until then, Southfield was a township undeveloped with approximately 15,000 residents. In 1817, the state was divided into counties and subsequently into townships consisting of 36 sections. Several sections were marked as Indian Reservations in compliance with the treaty with Ottawa. The first settler acknowledged is John Daniels who brought with him George White, Martin Lee, William Lee, and Edmund Cook. In 1960 Mary E. Thompson, sold 166 acres to the City for the purpose of building Southfield Civic Center complex. The first public library in Southfield was named after David Stewart who was Mary Thompsons great-grandfather. Mr. Stewart, a covenanter, came to Southfield in 1831. Many believe Southfield was named by its citizens because of it is located in south fields in Bloomfield.
