Sterling Heights became incorporated in 1968 as a city before was named Sterling Township. The last supervisor of Sterling Township was Anthony Dobry and he served on the very first city council. In the northern city limits a street is named Dobry drive after him. The first mayor of Sterling Township was Gerald Donovan. In Arenac County there was a small village that was named Sterling. In order to be within the law, which states an incorporated municipality cannot have the same name; the word �Heights� was added to the name thus becoming Sterling Heights. �Sterling Oaks� was at the same time an additional name being considered for the city.
