In 1938 The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra was founded. The orchestra works at encouraging the enjoyment, understanding and appreciation of music from the symphonic and orchestra. The Orchestra continues its original mission of presenting lectures, courses, musical events and concerts in Waterbury and other areas of the northwestern Connecticut. The first performance of the orchestra was in 1938 under direction of Maestro Mario DiCecco. The orchestra was incorporated in 1940 under the name of Waterbury Civic Orchestra and later in 1956 the name changed to the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra. The current conductor Leif Bjaland has been with the orchestra over 13 years and has a strong relationship with the community. Over 200 brilliant musicians are drawn to The Symphony from the area of New England to perform in the series subscription concert at the Palace Theater in Waterbury and Naugatuck Valley Community College Fine Arts Center.
