The Waukegan Park District was established on December 26, 1916 as a unit of government with special purpose as provided by Illinois Park District Code. The district has control of properties and land, 720 acres and 47 properties. Additional park resources are a greenhouse, bird sanctuary and nature preserve. In addition, the district operates beneficial recreation centers such as the Center for the Arts, an outdoor swimming pool, 6 soccer fields, 32 playgrounds, Waukegan BMX Park, Belvidere Recreation Center and more. There are also services and programs provided for the handicapped and senior citizens. The governing board is made up of 5 elected members. Commissioners are elected and serve a term of 6 years and receive no compensation.
