The city of Wheaton is the county seat of DuPage County, which means that it is the main administrative offices for all of DuPage County. It took over being the county seat in 1867 from the city of Naperville. There was much animosity from Naperville at this time and they refused to turn over court records and such. This then forced many Civil War veterans who lived in Wheaton to make what is now called the Midnight Raid and steal many of the files and county records. What was not taken in the raid was taken to the Cook County court for safekeeping but was then destroyed by the Great Chicago Fire in 1871.
