The largest city in Delaware and the county seat of New Castle County is city of Wilmington. It was granted a borough charter back in 1739, while under British rule, by King George II. Part of this new charter was changing its name from Willington to Wilmington in honor of the Earl of Wilmington, Spencer Compton. The borough was granted a city charter officially in 1832. In 1837 the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad was built. This helped Wilmington prosper with new industries and the more people moving into the city. During the civil war the economy grew even more with the demand for the products produced by the industries in Wilmington.
